Dyson V12s Detect Slim Submarine Review | A Powerful 2-in-1 Vacuum and Mop with Impressive Features

The Dyson V12s Detect Slim Submarine is the latest cordless vacuum from Dyson that aims to simplify floor cleaning with its ability to vacuum carpets and rugs while also mopping hard floors. As an upgrade to the popular V12 Detect Slim, the V12s retains the same powerful suction and adds new features such as the Dyson Submarine wet roller head, which allows it to deep clean all floor types within the home.

Design and Attachments

The V12s retains the lightweight and balanced design of its predecessor, measuring approximately 120cm tall and weighing just 2.97kg for easy manoeuvrability around furniture and tight spaces. Various tools are included to tackle different cleaning jobs - the Submarine wet roller head, a combination tool for vacuuming floors and upholstery, a hair screw tool, great for removing pet hair, and a crevice tool for tight spaces. There’s also a Fluffy Optic cleaner head that features doubled green laser power compared to previous models, illuminating more microscopic dust particles on floors for a more thorough clean.

Impressive Features

Powering the V12s is Dyson's proven Hyperdymium digital motor, which can generate up to 150 air watts of suction power. This allows it to easily lift dirt, dust and debris from any surface. An LCD screen on the V12s provides useful real-time data, displaying remaining battery life levels, selected power modes between Eco, Medium, and Boost, as well as particle counting to demonstrate its cleaning performance. However, the particle count feature is more for novelty than usefulness.

Wet Roller Performance

A key feature of the V12s is the Dyson Submarine wet roller head attachment. Using a system of precision water distribution through eight microjets and a motorised microfiber roller, the Submarine is able to lift dirt from hard floors while leaving them dry within minutes of cleaning. Testing showed it effectively removes messes, ground-in dirt, and dried-on stains from floors with minimal water needed versus traditional mopping methods. Some minor streaking can happen if too much water is used, but floors are left looking thoroughly clean.

Battery Life and Power

Powering the V12s is a nickel-cobalt-aluminium battery that provides strong suction for the entire runtime of each charge. Battery life averages around 50 minutes when using the non-motorised tools for vacuuming carpets and rugs throughout the whole home, which covers an area of approximately 1200 square feet in my tests. This provides ample time for cleaning before requiring a recharge.

Easy Cleaning

Maintenance of the V12s is simple. Emptying the bin and detaching the Submarine roller head for cleaning is a hassle-free process. The roller easily slides out and can be rinsed under running water to remove any dirt or residue. No particular tools are needed. It also air-dries quickly.

Pricing and Value

The Dyson V12s Detect Slim Submarine certainly requires a sizable investment. However, for the convenience of an all-in-one machine that can vacuum and mop effectively, it offers great value. When factoring in its powerful performance, versatile functionality and durability as a cordless machine, the V12s has the potential for long-term use.
