Masks aren’t always a great choice. They’re single-use and users have to know how to wear them properly to get the most benefit out of them. Sometimes, they even get out of stock. Dyson’s changing up the game, with their patent for a wearable air purifier in the form of headphones.

Dyson’s existing air purifiers are great, but there’s no way anybody can bring them out of the house. With this patent that was filed in July 2018 but only made public on 29 January 2020, Dyson has envisioned a product that will look mostly similar to normal headphones, with the addition of a mouthpiece that will guide filtered air to the wearer’s nose and mouth which can also be folded up when not in use.

The patent describes the earcups as a house for the motor and filters, being able to draw in 1.4 litres of air per second. With that in mind, the biggest question on my mind is how noisy the motors will be when the headphone is worn. Guess we’ll find out when the headphones are eventually launched in market.

The patent can be found on the UK Intellectual Property Office’s website.
